After many years of playing with digital ink and paint, I've started to return back to using the analogue variant of ink and paint and applied to paper by pen and brush. I've forgotten how much I love the effect of brushwork on paper and I think I'll be playing about with them more now.
Then last week,
Al Williamson passed away, which was a sad thing because he was one of the first and greatest influences in pencils and brush inking from when I was very little. I used to clip out his Star Wars syndicated strips from the newspapers and practice drawing using the clippings.
I remember being very happy upon buying Marvel's Star Wars #98 and discovering it was a stand-alone issue guest written by Archie Goodwin and guest illustrated by Al - a throwback to the syndicated strip days.
RIP master illustrator.
